There are life events that can be considered a risk to a child’s mental health, such as obstetric problems, emotional regulation difficulties, malnutrition, etc. There are also life events that can be classified as adverse and traumatic, such as situations of abuse or neglect that severely interfere with the child’s normal development.
The cumulative impact of risk factors
There is scientific evidence of how the accumulation of these circumstances leads to an altered life trajectory, making individuals more vulnerable to the possibility of developing a mental disorder.
Why “risk factors”?
The term ‘risk factor’ is chosen among many others (adverse circumstances, warning signs, adverse relational experiences, and/or victimization) because in scientific literature, risk factors are only discussed when their presence is shown to increase the relative risk of developing a mental disorder.
What is LISMEN?
LISMEN is a list of mental health items based on national and international scientific literature on risk factors.
The information it requests is accessible to professionals not specialized in mental health. It can be used in community health services (pediatrics, family medicine), in community services (educational centers, social services), or in specific services (mental health, juvenile justice, and others).
It can also be answered by a person interested in exploring their own personal history.
