Purpose of LISMEN. To detect mental health risk factors.

Scientific evidence

There is scientific evidence of how the accumulation of these circumstances, considered risk factors, generates an altered life trajectory that makes individuals more vulnerable to the possibility of suffering from a mental disorder.

The term ‘risk factor’ is chosen among many others (adverse circumstances, warning signs, adverse relational experiences, and/or victimization) because, in scientific literature, it is only used when its presence is shown to increase the relative risk of the onset of a mental disorder.

What is LISMEN?

LISMEN is a questionnaire developed by the research group on warning signs and early signs of schizophrenia (SASPE), at the Catalan Institute of Health, in Barcelona. The principal investigator was Dr. Jorge L. Tizón. This questionnaire:

Explores life events and individuals’ biographies (for example, separations from paternal figures, impoverished maternal and paternal functions, mother with depression).

Rapidly assesses the presence or absence of risk factors to guide the understanding of the case.

Also includes behaviors that may indicate alterations in attachment or in the relationship, and therefore, in the individual’s emotional structuring process.

Purposes of LISMEN

  • To collect and systematize information about risk factors.

  • To detect factors that, when grouped, may act as indicators of the possibility of suffering from mental health disorders in adolescence and/or adulthood.

  • To raise awareness among professionals about the importance of early detection.

Professionals from different fields: mental health, early intervention, education, social services, pediatrics, family medicine, etc., use the LISMEN method.

Scientific Basis and Construction

Its construction is based on:

  • International and national literature on risk factors in mental disorders, especially those referred to as severe mental disorders. (Artigue y Tizón, 2014)

  • Risk factors used in the Protocol of Preventive Activities and Health Promotion in Pediatric Age (Amigo et al., 1999; Tizón et al., 2008).

  • Factors identified and published in the book: Protocolos y programas elementales para la atención primaria a la salud mental (Tizón, San-José y Nadal, 1997).

  • Factors incorporated by the authors from their clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of children in at-risk states (Tizón, Artigue, Gomà, Parra y Marzari, 2004).
